right to the point.

In Safari, it looks good, tho the banner looks choppy,

you have way to many google adds for my blood, try adsense, for a colorful ad.
o place a ad in ebay for others to bid to have ad's on your sit, the higher your PR the more you'll get in the bids...

whats with the donations part? little steep dont you think..., make your visitors think you not money hungry, give then a ton of helpful and free things and in return they will donate a few bucks at a time. if your goal is 150 for the year, divide it into 12 or 11.

1. This is silly, but how do I install a theme? I downloaded two of them, but cannot for the life of me figure out what to do with them! Should I merely copy the unzipped contents into the HTDOCS directory?

upload the unziped them files to your themes folder.
then go ( and only if your site is up and running " installed" ) to /admin.php, perfences, the fist one in the list. scroll down and look for defualt theme, from there you can highlight and activate your new themes.

2. This is also silly, but, ummm, there's nothing there... I guess I don't really understand how this is supposed to work. Can I just insert my own code to integrate it into my own site?

you can if you like, but it will not be searchable in your site, or be in the menu... You can add modules, activate them and add your content there.

3. When I try to get to the admin panel, I get a message saying that the "mainfile.php" file is writeable. I have tried on my host (through ftp) and on my personal mechine (then uploading via ftp) to change the permissions to "444", but even after applying that, they return to "644". Anyone know why?

In most cases host set the permisions so that your ftp unit will not alow cmod to 444 unless you log into cpanel, and set them manualy in filemanager. the hosts feal its a security isue...

4. I understand that there is a "WordPress Module". Seeing that I am obviously not a XOOPS expert, how does this work? I've always liked WP and have used it in the past, so if I could integrate a WP blog into my upcoming XOOPS-Powered site, that would be fantastic.

Your right, There is a WP module, theres a good example here on Xoops.org. and theres another one on HelpXoops.info
they are simple to setup, and easy to use too.

5. On a similar note, what about using a different forum, say for instance, Simple Machines? Can that be integrated?

SMF, a very nice forum, I have a working example on HelpXoops.info of a SMF setup inside XOOPS as a module or a standalone, I havent tested the SMF module on the 2.0.18 yet but maybe some else has...

there are many other forums for xoops.
CBB,IPB,phpBB2,newBB,newBB2,SMF we have the basics covered and then some.

NOTE: check your version of XOOPS with the forum module, not all will work with newer or older versions.

Sorry about all the very, VERY n00b questions, but I am ready to dive into XOOPS and would appreciate a push in the right direction. Thanks!

Confused... posible, but arnt we all?

Heres a quote from my: Acceptable Usage Policy

Quote:

24. Streaming Video and Audio: Streaming Video and Audio is not permitted on our servers. You must zip the content to prevent this if you wish to have it hosted, and as everything else this content must be legal content and can not have someone else's copyright.

25. Egg Drop - Egg Drop Scripts are Not allowed, These are grounds for immediate account deletion without a refund.

26. Legal - If it is not legal in the United States of America, It is not permitted to reside on our server. If found, the account will be suspended.

27. Adult Material - Adult Material is not allowed, unless specified in your package deal or in the auction you may have bought from. Sites that contain adult material that is not on an adult approved server/package, the site will be suspended.

28. Chinese Forums - Chinese Forums are not allowed on our network. These sites require to much CPU usage. They almost require a dedicated server to run properly. If they are found on any server we will suspend them, and charge an admin fee if they are the cause of a CPU overloaded. Admin charges are usually about 25$ Per Hour.

29. ANIME - Anime Sites are not allowed on our network. If an Anime Site is found we will terminate the account. These sites are not allowed on the server because about 95% of them are illegal.
30. Other examples of unacceptable material include:
IRC Bots, Shoutcast, Torrents, Torrent Trackers, Torrent Clients, Proxy Scripts / Anonymizers, Pirated Software / Warez, ".img" / image hosting only sites that do not host an actual domain name, Escrow, High-Yield Interest Programs(HYIP) or related sites, Investment sites (FOREX, egold exchange), AutoSurf sites, Bank Debentures, Bank Debenture Trading Programs, Prime Banks Programs, lottery sites, muds / rpg's, hate sites, hacker focused sites/archives/programs, or sites promoting illegal activities.

Do you have access to the cpanel?

it will be somthing like:
yoursite. com/cpanel
or
yoursite. com/controlpanel

if you do, just use the full site backup or backup wizard.

Use care with a gamming script, may host and servers will not let you keep anime or gamming scripts. sence these violate their T.O.S. mostly sence they take up alot of broadwidth. and or not legal to own in the United states if your host/server is located in the United States.

If its all good, then i would suggest you take a simple module like humorgrafico, or humorvideo and examine it.
these are very basic modules, so they contain no sql files.
