I took the plunge today, straight from 2.4.4 to 2.5.3 and, as far as I can tell, all has gone OK! Followed the "Upgrading from previous versions older than 2.5.0:" section to the letter.

Thanks for the help.

Is there any CAPTHA facility that will work with XOOPS 2.4.4

Hi

Is there a captcha module or facility in XOOPS 2.4.4? I am using PHP 5.2.14.

I've used Xoops for one of my sites since 2004 but in recent years I've been bombarded with loan companies and spammers registering accounts and filling their profiles with links and texts to their viagra sites and loan companies! And yes, I have got "activation required by user" set, I have got a list of blocked username types and e-mail domains and comments have to be approved by me.

Other than users having to wait for me to manually authorise a user account, Captha must be the next best thing? But XOOPS 2.4.4 seems to lack a CAPTHA setting.

Hi

My sites have been running nicely for some time using Xoops 2.4.4. Though I'm an Xoops user of some 7 years, i've learned it's best to get all the facts before you being a significant upgrade!

I'd like to upgrade it to the latest 2.5.1a but note that the installation guide for sites using pre 2.5 only cover an upgrade from 2.4.5 to 2.5. I am using 2.4.4, as stated.

Is there a big jump or something significant that I will need to do with regard to 2.4.4 to 2.4.5 and then go from 2.4.5 to 2.5.1a? If so, can anyone tell me before I begin? Or can I go from 2.4.4. to 2.5.1.a without trouble?

Thanks

Ted

Is GIJOE still devloping Protector Module

Hi all

Not posted for a long time...

Is GIJOE still developing the Protector module as I note a new stable release has not been released since Nov 2009 (v3.41). I am using said version on two of my sites still but am curious as to why the long beta version of 3.5 is still not stable.

Is it because the module got to a point that hardly anything other than zero day exploits could get past it, or have PHP exploits not evolved so much in recent years?

Thanks

Ted

Hi

Thanks for the link to the notifications module. I've just given that a try but it's not really what I want.

The default notification system is just what I want as it displays the notifications at the bottom of each submitted photo. It's just that I need one of them to be enabled by default, instead of disabled. I thought there would be a field in the database somewhere that I could just flick from 0 to 1 but I can't work out where it is.

Hi

Using the MyAlbum 2.88 module and Xoops 2.4.4, I have several notification options displayed at the bottom that I want the user to be able to choose.

However, they are all unticked by default.

There is one that I want to have enabled by default as many of my users don't realise that it's there. It's the option "Notify me when a new comment is posted for this item."

I also want to change the default notification option from PM to e-mail so that when a comment is posted the user is automatically sent an e-mail without them having to do anything.

I'm not attacking XOOPS - I'm just asking what the thinking process is behing using plain text logins with very little emphasise being placed on the https option. If you didn't know it was there, you'd struggle to find it. And that is my point really - the option of using HTTPs should be made more obvious.

True - it costs to have a validated certificate, but not a self generating one. That costs nothing.

And yes, https won't protect against a breached server, but it will add a layer of protection to a server that has not been breached and is better than sending passwords down the line in the plain.

Hi

Using XOOPS 2.0.18.2, the default login block is conducted over plain, unencrypted, http instead of https.

I know that XOOPS uses the PHP md5crypt() function for converting the string to an MD5 value for storage in the database.

Prior to the string arriving at the server though, the login form can be intercepted? So why is https not used by default for the login block, in the same was as it is for Yahoo and Hotmail logins?

Turned out to be a permissions thing on the file - I needed to give Apache read permissions.

Cheers for your help.

Now I just need to work out why I got a blank page, and no error reporting despite enabling error reporting in every conceivable way!

How to determine Xoops version just from the files or database

If I were passed a copy of an XOOPS sites' files, and the MySQL database, how can I determine what version of XOOPS it was without actually restoring it to a full functional site?

I realise the version number is in the footer of the admin pages, but that value is not hard coded into the files I don't think.

Is the value in the database, or in a file? If so, where?

Thanks

Ted
