Block cache - please explain again

I had most of blocks on main page cached (with different TTL, if it's important). Without cache (totally disabled)page generates ~460-480 queries, 70-90 for live cache and some not-cached blocks.
BUT - sometimes I see:
- Where are visitors on site (even on frontpage)
- Queries counters jump to smth. like "571 Queries"

How, goddam, it can be???

460-480 queries? So many modules and blocks running on your startpage?

Is the option for updating templates and themes automatically disabled?

I made a small test locally and for one user with only a few blocks and it saved me 8 queries. Just a guess!

Because it's "Proving Ground" I have some extra blocks, which (I think) will never appear on live site at the same time, but... It's only small subset of blocks, as you can see here

No, I can ignore permanent decreasing on 30 queries, caching do jobs better

And one more observation - after update to 2.0.13.1 from 2.0.9.3 (same block cache settings for all frontpage block - re-checked a lot of times) I'm totally lost - minimal amount of queries now 130 instead of 72, but... no more 500+ queries incidents detected and overall slowdown to 20-40-60 seconds on page show also go away, average responce time is 1 second less than before update

It's hard to help without knowing what the queries are, and which blocks or modules are causing them.

Some modules improperly do queries before the code that handles the caching, which defeats the benefit of caching.

Some modules are inefficiently coded and have queries in loops.
