"Call to undefined function: session_set_save_handler()" Error

Well, I learned - it's PHP itself function, not XOOPS. But where (i.e "in which extension") I have to find it? According to php.net, it must be supported in PHP 4.3.9

php.ini

session.save_handler needs to be set to files..

ie.

session.save_handler = files

I have done session.save_handler = files bu I still have the same problem.
Config;
Apache 2
mysql  Ver 14.7 Distrib 4.1.13, for suse-linux (i686) using readline 5.0
PHP Version 4.4.0
