I've been watching the newbb postings carefully, since Invision is going payware.

It appears this site is now using the newbb 2 as well.

Koudanshi makes an XOOPS mod ported to the PHPBB.

I'm curious to read from others...their thoughts on the two, PHPBB vs NEWBB.

Both are great, but for a bit more piece of mind as far as upgrade paths go I'll be going for NewBB 2. In the end it is up to the indiviual to make their own choice, but I think it is one that must be given proper consideration as to the pros and cons.

I'd recommend NewBB2 personally.

No core hacks. Actively being worked on. Uses all the XOOPS calls and databases natively. I think some of the ideas from it may be incorporated into XOOPS (like finer permissions/groups). Actively being worked on. Quick responses from the team of devs that are coding it. Oodles of new features. Easier to modify as it is XOOPS native. New features already announced that will make it even better. Actively being worked on. Probably a bunch of other things I can't think of right now.

Devil's advocate time.

phpBB is one of the standards. If you decide later to not use XOOPS it should be easy to port your phpBB data over. Really nice feature set. Easy to use. A LOT of people are familiar with it so it's even easier due to being one of the defacto standards.

I'm not sure how active their dev team is but it does keep getting better.
