All,

I am pleased to put this note here that I just released XingSLI 1.0: the Xoops port of Kronolith 1.0 Final.

Kronolith is the calendar application from the Horde Project (http://www.horde.org). Right now, XingSLI implements a stand-alone calendar system, allowing repeating events, all-day events, custom fields, keywords, and multiple users management. It provides SQL and MCAL backend libraries.

Three other Horde applications, Imp 3.2.1 (WebMail), Turba 1.2 (AddressBook) and Nag 1.1 (TaskList) were intergrated in one single package named ImpXoopsMail, ImpXoopsMail has also been released recently.

All these modules require at least Horde Framework 2.3.1, a recent version of PEAR, PHP DOMXML and gettext extension.

Out of curiosity, was it difficult to separate the main functionality from Horde's own interface layer? How hard was it to pull just the display functionality you needed (i.e., minus the <html />, <head /> stuff, and just use the contents of the <body />)?

I'm curious because I tried to encapsulate PHPWiki in a XOOPS module, but the design was horrendous...there were too many interdependencies among the different "layers" (e.g., functionality, display-within-the-page and HTML page wrappers).

Please remeber to read carrefully the License information.
I'm sure few people didn't realise these XOOPS modules were not free, not even opensource.
Check if you are willing to follow this type of license or don't use it.

Here follows an extract of the license information for ImpXoopsMail :

Just wrap the output for XOOPS is not the main difficulty, for ex. you can do a ob_start(), ob_get_contents() and ob_end_clean() to catch it, then a regex replace to extract the <body>.

But I think you should first make sure that the session is correctly managed: XOOPS will start it and your application should work with the same and never destroy it when finished.

For Horde applications I didn't alter Horde Framework at all, just adapted the config and added a new XOOPS driver to handle login and env. stuff. Take a look at the ImpXoopsMail code, you will find that the things are quite self explaining.

It is not only unacceptable...

Since both XOOPS and the Horde applications are licensed under the GPL, any package using either of them must also be released under the GPL.

This license is invalid. Ignore it...

Bunny, I agree but at the same time not, I know this applies as both horde and XOOPS are GPL, but supposing some one makes a commercial mod, and they charge for it use, would this also be wrong if not released, under GPL?

Don't shoot me down, I don't fully understand these licences yet, and only have a very basic understanding of them, above is a question for support and not a comment of critism.

Of course you can write "commercial" mods (I do that too), and nothing forces you to release them. But if you release them, they must be released under the terms of the GPL, because they use XOOPS functions and XOOPS is released under the terms of the GPL, not the LGPL.

Also nothing says you have to release those GPL licensed modules publicly. You can keep them private and ask your clients not to release them, but because of the GPL, the client always has the right to release them, and you can't limit that right.

Study the GPL-FAQ. It answers most questions anyone could have about the GPL:

wjue, you seemed to have made a mess of the GPL license.

Any software that is subsequently based on opensource software has to remain opensource.

Yes, you may charged a fee for service rendered for a product, but not for the product itself.

There are Open Source Licenses that allow a derived work to be closed. The GPL is a Free Software License ("free speech, not free beer"), and under its terms, what you say is true.

Sorry to differ on the last point: You can charge a fee for the product, as much as you like, but whoever buys it from you or gets it in any other way must have the right to distribute it gratis or for a fee, changed or unhanged, and use it for any purpose. That is what the GPL is for. If you don't follow those rules, the GPL says you are not allowed to use the software at all (termination of license).

The Horde framework is based on the lesser GPL, wjue has a right to use it in a propriety product without opensource implications.

The Horde framework is licensed under the LGPL, that is right. Anyone can use that to build their own applications, open source or otherwise.

The Horde applications that wjue uses in his modules are not. They use the GPL with all the above consequences.

For what it's worth:

All of the applications re-packaged by this guy are licensed under the GPL, despite the fact that he removed the COPYING file from the distribution. His license is invalid; feel free to use the code under the GPL, remove his notices, etc., and certainly don't send him any money for it.

I can't believe my eyes here! This is a complete violation of the GPL. I'm not going to add anything more to this thread, since Bunny has covered me completely, BUT I would like to urge anyone curious NOT to use these modules in the future.

I'm very sorry to see people taking advantage of the GPL. Shame on you and long live Free Software!

Mr wjue seems not to be a bad guy, he is probably lost among all these license issues.
But he should realise that his packages are illegal, and i urge him to repair the GPL violation he made as soon as possible.

Hi,

I am the bad guy who wrote ImpXoopsMail and XingSLI stuff and wanted to bring some Horde Applications to the XOOPS community (for FREE, despite the fact I have chosed IPB style license), I would like to inform you that I have decided to stop the Horde related development though I have found a way to actually realizing the same service as ImpXoopsMail and XingSLI do, but NEVER using a single line of code of the GPL part Horde stuff, thus, the original IPB equivalent license could be used without controversy.

As I am no longer interested in Horde at all , if someone here is interested in continuing this project please let me know, I will give him (her) all elements and codes I have done, (s)he will be free in using it either with restricted license (like IPB) or with GPL.

Sorry for having created such controversy, I appreciated discussion, not the numerous insults made here, but as a reasonably educated man I just ignored them.

So when it turns out you can't close your project against the freedom offered by the GPL, you suddenly loose interest? There's a real believer in free software...

I surely hope someone will be willing to continue your commendable efforts while keeping the Horde applications as free as they where intended to be.

*commendable efforts*? Never would have guessed that you thought his efforts were commendable! Most posts in this thread only communicated that his efforts were despicable.

I'm sure we could find a better way to encourage open source license compliance without discouraging people's development efforts.

While Wjue hasn't jumped completely into the open source licensing bandwagon, he did seem to be moving toward the right direction, as indicated by his willingness to offer his module for us to use.

I'm just itching to ask one question, directed to those who have flammed Wjue in this thread: Had you needed his module, would you have held off using it until he changed the terms of licensing? Or would you have gone ahead and use it anyways?

Any new XOOPS module is always highly welcome, and I'm always willing to accept the developers terms, free software or not. (Although XOOPS modules are also covered by the GPL, but that's not the point here.)

The only thing I ask is that any developer who uses someone else's work as the basis for his own must also respect that developers decisions regarding the terms of use for his program.

In this case the Horde team has decided to put their work under the GPL, requiring that any work based on it must also use the GPL and no other license, whatever its terms. This decision must be respected and accepted by anyone wishing to use the Horde applications, wether directly or for modifications. Chuch Hagenbuch ("chagenbu"), founder of the Horde Project, has expressed a similar view in this thread.

What I don't understand is why wjue doesn't want to release his work under the GPL, while professing to be a supporter of the Free Software movement and even releasing other programs under the GPL. Since he said in the forum that he won't give any explanation for this decision, we'll probably never find out. But they seem to be strong enough to make him lose all interest in the project, even allowing other developers to use it under the same GPL that was so unacceptable for him.

(And no, if a program violates the copyright of another free software developer, I will not accept its license and not use the program.)

Bunny, I certain respect your strong stance on GPL, and especially your ethical consistancy, not to mention your contributions to the XOOPS community.

My disappointment was over the tone used by some in a number of the comments written here -- I think it was rather disrespectful and hence destructive (irrespective of wjue's decision to discontinue this particular XOOPS module).

Obviously, wjue wanted to contribute to the XOOPS community, and has spend some time to develop it. He should be commended for this.

Of course, we should also encourage him to respect the work of other developers but not breaking the terms of the GPL license.

But will talking at/about him disrespectfully encourage him to be more respectful of other's work (ie. the GPL license). i don't think so.

That's all my point is. And if wjue should want to discontinue his work on this module for personal or commercial reasons, so be it. There no need to give him flak about it, or trump him up as an evil villian. How is any of that good for wjue or the XOOPS community?

Again, I respect your position, but respectfully disagree with some of your methods here.

I was just writting this comment, to say, lets all just chill out, have a drink or something, but most of all get along we're here to help others and be helped, Wjue has now given up the project but he has stated he will help who ever wants to take it up, so let some one else do it and make it GPL...........
