vulnerability in phpmailer

A vulnerability is reported in PHPMailer, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a vulnerable system if Sendmail method is enabled.

Although the issue is not critical in XOOPS environment, we would suggest to switch to other methods than Sendmail, or to download quick fixes:
fix for XOOPS 2.0*
fix for XOOPS 2.2*

Note: official response and solutions are still being waited from phpmailer development group, and will be released in XOOPS 2.017 and XOOPS 2.25

Thank GIJOE, irmtfan, vaughan etc for reporting and solutions.

The Pangaea Experiment

The Idea of the pangaea experiment is to run a Community Website so that it is entirely run by the community. Every Registered User has moderator access to this site. A whole new approach to Social Networking. That said this is more an experiment to see if we can get a well functioning community site with all members in a seat of power rather than a way to annoy all the other site users. Lets see which way this goes.

If you are interested in this idea then register and join in if not please let me know what you think of the site. It is still waiting on some content but a lot of this will build up as the site gets going.

vulnerability in SPAW editor

Vulnerability was reported in some version of the SPAW editor, which is used by some of XOOPS third-party modules.

Module "tinycontent" is one of the modules using SPAW. Although we are not sure which version(s) is vulnerable, we suggest disable SPAW in tinycontent and remove the "modules/tinycontent/admin/spaw/" folder from your server.

Master in Neuroscience

Well, it seems about done.

It doesn't look too impressive, but this is being a very difficult site for me. I was forced by the customers to use University of Granada server, as administration discourages the use of external shared hostings for reasons nobody understands.

Share your howto's on Howtodude.NET!

I was looking for a way to archive my howto's. A howto is an informal and short description of how to accomplish something. I wanted to archive my howto’s online so that I could access these from various locations and I was surprised that there was no good alternative. So I made one:

On Howtodude.NET, you can archive your own howto's so that you can access these from everywhere at every time. You can also learn how other people did it by searching their howto's.

Howtodude.NET was designed to be a simple website with some clear calls for action. As long as the user is not logged in, the call for action is to login or register. Once the user is logged in, the call for action shifts towards adding howto’s. Howto’s are made searchable so that it is easy to find a howto once the site has been filled with more content.

Howtodude.NET makes use of a single module for its core functionality: Article. Using only one module for core functionality helped to keep the site simple. The tags are created by XOOPS Tag that is well integrated with Article. Smartsection is used on pages like http://www.howtodude.net/about/ because of its great strength in URL rewriting. Liaise is used for the contact form. MP Manager is used for sending private messages.

Howtodude.NET was launched today. It will take some time before the site is filled with content!

By the way, I'll log my XOOPS howto's on this place!

XOOPS 2.0.16 WYSIWYG-Edition

One very often inquires after the use of the FCKeditor. Not all modules support the WYSIWYG editors. We found a way to the FCKeditor (current version 2.4.2 Build: to use 14978) under XOOPS 2.0.16! The FCKeditor as module, is an extension of SIMPLE XOOPS and we this under XOOPS 2.0.16 merged. In addition the content module DH-Info runs also. (Further modules participate, see in the weBLog of XOOPS-magazine). In addition a SQL file is inclusive for testing, but you must change mainfile.php. Since this way is somewhat pedantic, I recommend this version only for advanced XOOPS-user.
Have a lot of FUN

Introduction to XOOPSinfo - an English local support site

I am glad to introduce yet another great local support site to the community, the XOOPSinfo, http://xoopsinfo.com
The XOOPSinfo is the result of community collaborative efforts from the Xi Team, led by JMorris.

According to Xi Team's introduction, the site was recognized by former project management team as "officially certified local support site". However, as the XOOPS Project management is now turned to an open way, the Project won't announce any site directly without proper evaluation following our management rules.

Now the XOOPSinfo is under evaluation status and we look forward to reviews from XOOPS community. Corresponding official decision will be made by the XOOPS Project Council or an appropriate team upon community's feedbacks.

Appendix:

The XOOPSinfo, http://www.xoopsinfo.com, "was born out of a desire to provide a centralized portal where XOOPS users, developers, designers, and professional service providers could join together and share information and resources."

It "is managed by a group of volunteers that were selected from the greater XOOPS community. These volunteers may or may not be involved in the XOOPS Project or XOOPS Foundation. Their role here is that of a community member."

For more information, please refer to http://xoopsinfo.com/modules/about/
