while upgrading from 2.0.18 to latest XOOPS igot this error

You have problems with "writing" access to your

XOOPS_VAR_PATH/caches/smarty_compile

subdirectory. It needs to be set to 777, the same as all other subdirectories under

/xoops_data

No that what i had already done,

the main problem was that my site was turned off. when i switched it on upgrade did painlessly.

when ever i do an upgrade i first copy my site like if it is

http://www.mysite.com/web then i copy the :/web folder and save it somewhere else on on the server then i do upgrades to this actual one and if somthing goes wrong that i replace this with the one i had copied
and everything comes back to its orignal place. in cpanel all this takes merely 1 minute.

Don't forget to backup the database, because this can be modified too with an upgrade and make it useless for the former version. (cPanel has an easy function for that too).
