ive got some problems with my personal site (xoops), and want to upgrade to a newer version.

But i dont know if i should try 2.1 (still unstable?), or wait for 2.2 release... If i upgrade to 2.1, it will be easy to upgrade to 2.2?

Thanx in advance,
Mauricio

Hi

I?d stay with 2073 or 2093 due the huge compatibility with modules and stability. At least for a while. I feel that moment like a turning point, a crossroads...

Waiting for xoopsphere.
What do you think?

im waiting for xoosphere too, but 2.2 looks very good, and will be available soon... If the core team will provide an easy way to upgrade to xoosphere, i think ill upgrade to 2.2. Im interested in the fact XOOPS is getting more and more a "plataform", with pm system, profile and another non-essential funcions being handled by modules and not by the core.

i find 2.0.10 more stable than 2.0.7.3 or 2.0.9.3 and with the added security fixes, a whole lot better..

and come on guys, read the article for xoosphere.. it says it will be backward compatible with 2.2 and possibly pre 2.2. we're all waiting for xoosphere but that's gonna be a whole year yet b4 u see that..

For the XOOPS 2.x development, we're following the lInux Kernel versioning scheme, which means that the odd release versions (2.1, 2.3 etc.) are the alpha/beta/development releases, and the even releases (2.2, 2.4 etc.) releases are the stable releases which are usable for public websites and production environments. So, wait for 2.2, as that's what it's for. All earlier releases are for development and testing only.

Waiting for XooSphere to upgrade your site? Wow.. that means you'll be waiting for about a year before you can. Read the planning in the Roadmap.

Use XOOPS 2.2 (and 2.4 if that will happen).

Upgrading a XOOPS site to a newer version is not that complicated (as long as you do not use too many hacks, or stay with the current release) I have created a flash tutorial that guides you through the process:

XOOPS System Upgrade Flash Tutorial

Which guides you through the process (shows an actual 2.0.9.2 to 2.0.10 upgrade).

Since you are using 2.0.7.3, you will already need to upgrade to 2.0.9.2, then to 2.0.10 to get current and ready for the 2.2 upgrade when it becomes available.

So remember that staying with an older version does not mean that you will be saving steps to a newer release, and not having to change things that often. Aside from the fact that security fixes are usually included in each release, if you wait to upgrade you, will just have to do several upgrades in a row to get to a current version.

HTH.

It's also a nice idea to documentate all of the changes/hacks you have applied to your 'default' XOOPS install.

A few weeks ago I was also still running 2.0.7.3 and stupid me had not documentated any of the changes I had made. So I didn't dare to upgrade At least I installed a apache/mysql server on my local PC and tested the upgrade patches. It worked without any fatal errors or something, so i installed the new patches at my XOOPS website Most of the changes i had made do I have made again in the 2.0.10 install and since then I'm noting any kind of change in a changelog.
