I keep seeing references to SPAW and SPAW editors. What is it? How does it help your website?

If you go to wf-projects, you can download XOOPS version of this.

I found that website also -- looks too complex for me. I should probably stay away from that.

Check the latest news here on Xoops.org for Koevi editor.
Its done by samuel and he will publish a version soon that contains examples how to integrate it into different modules.

It also has the advantage of supporting not only IE but also Firefox.
