Where do I start??

I am thinking of making my own themes where would be the best place to start on creating one would it be better just to tinker around with a existing one or start from scratch??

I think it is easier to start with an existing theme then to create one from scratch. I also recommend checking out the Commented CSS Stylesheet which explains for what elements each style rule in the default theme's css is used.
