I did just think of another possibility, which I stumbled upon while trying to work out a solution.
I am running the 1.44 version of News - does anyone know if upgrading to 1.56 (found
here) would fix the problem? I mean, other than the usual axiom that the most recent version is the best?
Note that the changelog says:

rather than "all editors loaded to Xoops'.
I am asking because I didn't want to b0rk my current request for help by off and installing a new version of the offending software.
