I just use a network card for one of slots on the laptop and plug a dongle with a network plug on the end and away I go. One of the routers I got even came with a USB network card that has a spot to plug the network cable into. Pretty handy, even if I have no practical use for it. But hey, Free is good!

Ok i been looking at some network pictures and i can now speak network talk you guys my understand what i have and what i dont have now.

Ok my Desktop has a Ethernet 10/100 Lan Card built in.

I now have a cat5 cord.

Now my laptop does not have an Ok my Desktop has a Ethernet 10/100 Lan Card built in instead it has an Intergrated Card bus (PCM200) so what hardware do i need guys? to link the 2 using the cat5.

Oh i forgot to mention my desktop has 6 USB ports. And laptop has 4 USB ports can you use USB to?

I have a 10/100 cardbus PC card from unex plugged in the laptop. It's simply plugged in to my network with a cat5 cable.

cool i got it.. so i need to buy a xircom 10/100 cardbus PC card and it plugs into my laptop and the cat5 plugs into the xircom and then the cat5 into the desktop ethernet internal lan... wooo.. WOOT

oK well im just so suprized i didnt need a hub or anything really expensive... its amazing how cheap an home network is and i think i can use the one internet connection for both? this will save me heaps.

im kinda all excited now lol something new for me to learn and explore maybe if i get really good at it i can link the other computers but for now i only want my desktop monster and the portable linked..... so what are some of the nifty things u can do with a network

Share files and folders, use one printer for all computers and add other machines for dedicated file sharing or use it for ftp or webhosting. The options are pretty much unlimited.

I guess I take it for granted now since I have always had a network at my disposal since I started playing around with computers 7 or 8 years ago.

As an additional layer, sure but for the sake of memory and performance, I don't bother with NIS. I don't even use NAV anymore, bloody resource hogs...
