Block spacing within a column

Advanced apologies for newbie question...

I am trying to increase the space between blocks/modules within the same column (vertical space). I have tried adjusting multiple variables in themes and templates with no success. Can someone point me in the right direction?

well this is highly theme specific, but try adding this to your style.css file in the theme directory:
/* Adjust left/right col block spacing */
#leftcolumn .blockContent, #rightcolumn .blockContent
  {margin-bottom: 10px;}
