Hi there,

I currently run a PDA software website which lists all sorts of software.

I'd like to make it more interactive, and was wondering wether XOOPS would help?

My site is here: http://www.pocketpcsoft.net

I currently have around 13,500 different software products listed.

Does anyone think I could make this more interactive?

I was thinking of linking each and every piece of software to a forum entry, would this be possible with Xoops?

If not could I create a forum by the categories I display on the home page?

thanks for any comments, I'm not sure I can do what I want!

regards,

Greg

Nice site Greg !

Xoops is definately flexible, and could definately do what you want. Of particular interest might be the upcoming Wf Section V2 which is by far the best looking article managment module I've seen in any CMS as far as features go. Of interest to you would be the linking articles to a forum feature. As for linking a download to a forum, I think that is a great idea and one I imagine would be pretty easy to implement.

No I don't have any CMS in there at all.

I have a SQL database with all the software in it, which I use PHP to get at it and display it.

I then use Greymatter to blog the occasional news items.

Can you tell me/point me at more info about this?

Is there anything clever I could do to automatically take the SQL database and create links to forums or somesuch?

I have just put up a test Linux system so I can try new things out without affecting the live site :)

cheers,

greg

Whatever module you use, with so many products, you would have to get help in converting the database. Someone from the community may be able to help you in deciding and converting. Of course, you would likely have to pay for it.

Yes, it is quite a number of products.

Are you connected with pocketgear.com or is that an independent site, you just link to?

The XOOPS myLinks module has comments attached to all items, which could perhaps be the "forum" part, you ask for. Making forums for each category is not a problem (How many categories are there? 20? 25?)

Converting the site and populating the XOOPS database with links can be quite a task - but not impossible. I'm sure someone can help you, although as tl says, it will most likely cost you some dollars/euros.

ok thanks, maybe worth me trying this out then!

pocketgear.com is independent, I link to them. I have some listings they don't and vice versa I would imagine.

ok thanks for all the comments, I'm now ready to start trying to convert my site, I'm going to replicate my site on my local home PC, then try XOOPS out on that first, before moving it onto my live site.

So any volunteers to help with this, and could you give me an idea of the kind of pay you'd want for helping?

regards,

greg
