Mine doesn't focus on photos either but car guys like their pictures.
It appears to be very easy to remove the image from the block. I think you'll want the photo name along with the date which isn't in the block template. You can track down the variable name from the viewalbum/photo templates and that should work.
Also, I'd guess you'd want to truncate the photo name in case there are long names that might look bad if printed in full. Also easy enough to do in the template.
I know there is always opinions on competting modules but I have xoopsgallery working like I want it and hope to see the dev continue so I don't have to rebuild the albums. Forums are more important on my site.
