You don't say what happened before this went wrong, Did you change anything in your mainfile.php? did you rename a database or move it? Check your mainfile.php and make sure all your connection strings are correct and. Also update the system module and try again.

if this doesn't do anything, see if you can access your database through e.g. your hosts admin interface, phpMyAdmin or whatnot.

If you cannot do that either, contact your host

Time for a new host? Bottom line is that you need to make backups even if the host does or doesn't. You can grab backups from phpmyadmin or other ways. There is a module somewhere that gzips the db and makes it available for download.

I got same error when I tried to move my website from a W2k machine to a FreeBSD machine.
I ftp everything from old site to the new location and modified mainfile.php for new configuration.
When I connected to the new site it show this error:
------------------------
Error [Xoops]: Unable to connect to database in file /usr/local/www/data-dist/www/class/database/databasefactory.php line 34
------------------------
I still not figure out why the db not able to be connected.

It means that the information for the database in mainfile.php is incorrect, or that the database itself isn't functioning. Make sure the mainfile.php info is absolutely correct, and try to connect to the dabaste using another application (phpmyadmin or something).

Thanks for replying.
I just solved the problem.
It is case sensitive. The DB name from the mainfile.php and MySQL DB is different case.
