I'm thinking of using XOOPS for a home/school website.
The purpose being to create a site full of content useful for parents and people in the community associated with the school.
My main concern is security. As we all know kids will be kids and try to hack/crack anything. Should I be concerned about how secure XOOPS is.

Xoops in and of itself is reasonably secure, so long as you avoid auto logins and the like. If your running on a school server, you may want to be concerned over access points to your Apache/Linux (Other) machines that host your site.

I'm sure others would like to espouse their endless wisdom here for you

The site itself would be hosted by Lycos who currently provide us with our hosting package. Would you say this is the best option or should we host it ourselves?.

Do you have any further advice to someone new to the XOOPS CMS?

If it's externally hosted, then its definately safe since it's not on your network. Depending on your experience, you may or may not want to host it yourself.

I've never hosted with Lycos, but others have. So long as they provide mySQL, PHP and other typical hosting options (preferably Linux over IIS) I would assume your good to go there. Check with others here about their experiences with Lycos.

Good Luck

Free Lycos hosting is not that good - I don't know about the paid hosting.

We have the paid hosting with PHP and MySQL support. Is XOOPS quick and easy to set up or does it take some time?

What takes the longest (by far!) is to upload the files to the webserver.

If MySQL database is setup properly it doesn't take more than a few minutes to setup XOOPS.

I must say that the response time to my questions is superb. I thank you for your time and will get back intouch if I have any problems.

Thanks

Pure coincidence

Don't get too comfortable with this. I am known to miss a huge amount of threads due to sleep/work - so the best bet is to post between 4 PM and 12 AM CET (GMT + 1)
