I've been waiting for something like this for a long time, a module that can take a list of chosen stories by story ID, rather than just one or the last xx stories and display them in a block along with a thumbnail:

Spotlight comes close but can only do one article AFAIK now. Currently I have to do it manually which is a chore but I am more than happy to share the html I use if you like, until hopefully someone with more skills than I decides to attempt this for real.
