Maybe you did not fill in the right physical/virtual path to XOOPS in the mainfile.php?

No, as I said in my earlier post I think the path settings are fine. I can tell from my browser window title bar that XOOPS is making the shift from the entry file to the /modules/news directory ("News" is my start page) internally even though the page remains blank.
