I bumped myself off the search engines on Sept 29th when I re-did the keywords on my site.
I was getting placed in the top 10 consistently on google and Yahoo before I messed with the metas.

I see today my first visitor from google since that fateful day! Yeah!

So if you find yourself in a similiar situation where you've screwed yourself out of good
rankings on the search engines. And you act quickly to fix it, you can be back on the searches in < 3 weeks.

I love xoops!

That is good Info Catalin. Thanks!

Wingz, I added too many keywords and they dropped me immediately
I did two bad things:
1) Too many keywords. and
2) The same keyword more than three times

I'm slowly pulling myself back up. I'm going to take Catalin's advice and use that tag so see if I can get things going faster.

Hi

There is a link on the google site somewhere (I haven't got it handy, sorry) which gives an overview of how the google ratings system works.

Unlike some other search engines, Google ignores meta keywords.

Things that google does care about are:
* The name of your page
* The density of keywords on the page (ie the search terms)
* How many other sites link to your page AND the popularity of those sites (a link from a highly rated site gives your site more 'google cred' than from a low rated site).

Other search engines do care about keywords and probably work differently. Since they tend to use the density of keywords to determine the relevance of a page, you should be careful not to duplicate your meta keywords. If you do, some search engines will assume you are trying to exploit this to increase your page ranking - they retaliate by dumping your rating !!
