Smarty 3 and Smarty 4 coming soon to XOOPS

We're moving to Smarty 3.x and Smarty 4.x - please help us with testing and improvements!

Following development has happened so far:

1) Geekwright has initiated the conversion to Smarty 3 for XOOPS 2.5.11

2) Mage made some improvements to the Smarty 3 code

3) I've updated Mage's Smarty 3 version to Smarty 4
Direct download as a Zip file is here

Our current thinking is to:
a) release XOOPS 2.5.11 with Smarty 3 (it would be compatible with PHP 2.5.3 up to PHP 7.4)

b) soon after, release XOOPS 2.5.12 with Smarty 4 (minimum PHP version would be then PHP 7.4, and it would be fully compatible with PHP 8.2.x - I'm testing this above version with PHP 8.2.3

So who is going to help us with testing and development ???

I am a beginner (weak) programmer and with a complex (difficult)I can't help you. I can help with testing.
There is a test domain where xoops 2.5.11 is installed.

It is not installed XoopsCore25-test_smarty3 on PHP version 7.4.33 (MySQLi extension mysqlnd 7.4.33)
It comes to creating tables and a white screen appears.

Installed from version 8.0. If you then switch to 7.4, then the site will work.

And yet I was able to install XoopsCore25-test_smarty3 on PHP version 5.6.40.
Probably, I made a mistake earlier in the installation actions.

When installing XoopsCore25-test_smarty4 swears at a file that doesn't exist
Fatal Error Failed opening required '.../public_html/class/libraries/vendor/symfony/polyfill-ctype/bootstrap80.php' (include_path='.:/usr/share/php') file: .../public_html/class/libraries/vendor/symfony/polyfill-ctype/bootstrap.php : 15

It's getting closer!

We're still testing and making improvements, as you can see from the commits on GitHub and Pull Requests

There are still couple of minor issues, but it looks pretty solid. Yesterday I upgraded our test site that it's quite big, and it went pretty well.

This site is actually running already on 2.5.11 and Smarty 3

While we encourage to test the code from GitHub, don't use it yet on production sites.
