http 500 error can't access site

beginning yesterday i started getting an http 500 error when trying to access my site.
Nothing was changed. Nothing upgraded. it just started happening.

XOOPS Version XOOPS 2.5.6
PHP Version 5.6.40
mySQL Version 5.5.60-MariaDB
Server API apache2handler
OS Linux

I figured out today I can access the backend by typing admin.php after the url

everything on the backend works and is visible

but index php is obviously not accessible because i get the error instead of seeing the site.

I tried Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Avast Secure Browser. all with the same result.

I cleared the caches, did a virus and malware scan, cleaned the registry, etc.

nothing seems to work. Is this my computer doing this or is it protector for some reason?

Anyone have any ideas?

I think that your hoster made some changes , ask them first

hmm when i go tohttp://zapenglishclub.com/modules/newbb/ its works

check your template or first try to disable block which appear only on the homepage
if that not help try to rename modules , from ftp one by one recognize the erroring module

ow try also with the default theme , maybe that can help

I think I just figured it out.

It's Simplenewsletter 2.32 that decided to take a ????? on the website. With it deactivated the website is working again

There should be no "index.php" file in:
zapenglishclub.com/modules/

So check where is the call to it coming from and fix it, so XOOPS is not looking for it anymore.

It's also possible that XOOPS is looking for zapenglishclub.com/modules/xxx/index.php, where the "xxx" is a variable. If the variable is not set, then "xxx" is empty and XOOPS is looking for:

zapenglishclub.com/modules//index.php

This isn't a new install. It's been running since 2012. It's just this week it decided to crap out
