Hi there,

I hope someone can help me.
Is there a dictionary or glossary module that I can export/import Excel file? We have an extensive dictionary which is stored as Excel file that we would like to share within the organization, but it takes so much time to retype all that in. I was wondering if there is a module already out there... but the Module link is kind of hard to know the each individual module itself.

Thank you for your help in advance!

-Maya

Maya,

I don't know of any dictionary module that will directly import an Excel file, athough there may be one. It should not be too difficult to import the excel file into a dictonary though doing the following:

- find a dictionary module that you like (lexikon, etc).
- export your Excel file to a .csv format
- modify the csv file 'slightly' to match up with the fields necessary for the tables in the dictionary module (this will require looking at the ./sql/mysql.sql file to understand what's require.
- using a tool like phpmyadmin you can import the .csv file

If you can post a sampling a the .csv file (a row or two) along with which dictionary module you want to use you might get lucky and have someone here tell you exactly how to accomplish what you want.

Welcome to XOOPS and good luck!

Thank you for the reply!

We are trying to make a dictionary of English to Japanese and vise varsa that we use quite extensively.
The list goes up to 17568 rows.
Thus it would be nice to import the excel file instead of typing them in one by one... Worst case scenario, I would do so, but I was wondering if there is a better way to do this.

I have Lexikon module currently setup.

The .csv file example is below.
I don't know if it will display correctly, but here it goes...
This one is a simple 4-column one.

It appears as below when I open it in notepad..

Japanese,English,Date Added
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
100次騒音,100th order noise,1/12/2012
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
CHP (California Highway Patrol) passby,1/12/2012
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
CPU クロックノイズ,CPUclock noise,1/12/2012
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Thank you so much for the help in advance!

Now try to import it using phpMyAdmin.

Are you familiar with working with databases?

Also, if you're using Lexikon, I've updated it to XOOPS 2.5.5 Admin GUI, so you can try it out.

Thank you for the reply.
This is my first time using phpMyAdmin to be honest.
I'm not eactly sure what I need to do to import it....

I have installed and updated the Lexikon to the Beta 1.
It looks nice. :)

Thanks,
Maya
