"Who's Online" Very Inaccurate

I noticed today when I logged on to my very new site that it reported "17 users online", which is odd because I have maybe five registered users. I looked at the detail and the IP addresses were all nearly the same. It was apparently counting one user as being online in every page he visited.

Is there a fix for this?

You can try Who's Online blocks from other modules like Membership by Trabis. I believe it is more accurate.
