I just installed Xoops......and can not upload a theme

I am totally new to a CMS and this is my first attempt at something like this.

I have installed Xoops, I have read all the documentation I have been able to locate regarding installing a theme (not much as most every link on this subject is dead). I downloaded a theme, extracted it and have been attempting to install it in the themes directory and I find I can not upload the theme.

Response: 550 sd-024-rainbow: Permission denied

I am in the core in the themes directory. Apparently I have not done something correctly, can someone help me?

This is about FTP, right?
What client are you using?
Can you see the directory listing of the (remote) server?
Which permission (chmod) is set for your themes directory?
How did you upload the XOOPS core and not encountering the same error?

Hi laverne11,

welcome to XOOPS!

How did you install XOOPS? Was it manually, by copying your files to your host via FPT?

If you were able to install XOOPS via copying the files yourself, then you should be able to
copy your theme to the /themes directory.

It seems like you don't have the right permissions to copy the files to your server. If this is the case, you should contact your host directly.

Once you have your permissions set, you can then upload the theme to you themes directory, and select it in your Admin (in the System -> Preferences Main -> General Settings)

Maybe you're using an HTACCESS file which is restricting too much... could give this.

It was an automagic installation by my hosting company, 1and1.com and it is V2.2.

As I said, this is the very first time I have attempted anything like this.

Yes I am speaking of FTP uploading. I actually located a XOOPS theme that is identical to the design of the website I intend to transfer into XOOPS so I thought this is the perfect match.

I am not a programmer or engineer have never done much but plain old html and css, but I am willing to learn and believe in asking questions when I don't understand something. I appreciate all the assistance anyone wishes to render.
I decided on XOOPS for 1 reason and that it appeared to be the easiest option for a newbie and I desperately need a CMS as the amount of information on my site is getting staggering. It is a genealogy/history based site

The one thing I have found that was discouraging is that all the links to the "helps" in the beginners corner guide are dead or broken.

.htacceass has only this in it:

The problem with these automatic installers is that they never get updated and thus install older versions of the proposed programs.

Best is to install (or upgrade to) the current 2.3.3 version (See head front page).
Your .htaccess seems alright, because it selects PHP 5, which is better than PHP 4.

Well, there is no difference in getting your files on the server with FTP, if it is a CMS or HTML site.
