I would like to either simplify, or altogether eliminate the user menu, so that after someone logs in, it just says Welcome userid. or just userid, where userid is the users name as a link to their profile, where they can click it and access everything they need in there. Is this possible with User Profile module? Or would I need something else?

You can eliminate User Menu by making it invisible. Go to:

yourwebsite.com/modules/system/admin.php?fct=blocksadmin

and select "no" for "Visible"

thanks Mamba, I actually knew that part :) but not how to add the users name to the page. Bumciach, I will try that. Any place particular it goes?
