It does not start with a:1:{. in fact, all it has is mysite.ca in that field. I do see sort of content you mention in the conf_value of the sensor_words conf_name so I believe I am looking in the right place.

Sorry, I'm very weak on the database side of things.

Try with clearing the value in the preferences and then save. After that fill it in with the correct value and save again.

I cleared the value in the mail setup preferences and then put it back in. It is the very same, just mysite.ca.

Try once to put
a:1:{i:0;s:9:"mysite.ca";}

in the field with phpMyAdmin (the number after S: is the number of characters between the quotes).

I entered the information as suggested.
It is reflected in the mail preferences.
I can see no other change.
The errors persist. Mail is still sent as it should be from what I can see.

I mean when I make the entry you suggested a:1:{i:0;s:9:"mysite.ca";} with phpMyAdmin, that is exactly what appears in the SMTP host(s)field under the Mail Setup Preferences in the site.

I was expecting to see just mysite.ca there, but I get the entire "a:1:{i:0;s:9:"mysite.ca";}"

I uploaded the checksum files again and am not noting anything that surprises me.
It does not find the install, xoops_data, or xoops_lib files of course because install is not there, and the data and lib files are moved out of the root.
One language file seems invalid in the 2.3.2b release:
./class/mail/phpmailer/language/phpmailer.lang-fo.php content invalid

But my site is in English, so I don't see the issue there.
