I can't get either Doc Manager or DMS to work with 2.3.1

Document manager (Doc Manager):
I can activate, but when I try to open the administration link:

Root folder is : OK
parent_folder is : Error (create the parent_folder folder in the folder below)
parent_folder permissions are : Error (adjust the permissions for the parent_folder folder)
tools folder is : Error (create the tools folder in the folder below)

I can change the root folder, but the can't get anywhere with the parent folder
-------------
Document Management System (DMS) - won't activate
Unable to install dms. Error(s):
Installing Document Management System

Invalid default value for 'obj_id'
Back to Module Administration page
--------------
File manager 3.0 and CVS are locked up (permissions).

I hate term 'noob' but it applies here. I did get a site up and running in a day using joomla, but I really don't like the interface and illogical workflow. Primarily need simple document management (including uploading) is the major function (my company intranet site)

Any help will be appreciated (or back to Joomla, oh no!)
(edit - added notification)

Doc Manager:
It seems there is a setting missing for the directories where the files are stored. Check the documentation files on how it has to be specified (full data path cfr XOOPS_ROOT_PATH) and which permissions are to be given. Maybe some subdirectories have also to be created and set to the right permissions.

DMS:
Quote:
Invalid default value for 'obj_id'
Check your SQL file. Probably it contains a default '' clause for a numeric field. Change it to default '0' .

Try also a search on this site with the module names or some keywords from the error messages. There are not so much users with these kind of modules, so expierence is rather slim.
