Humm, everything seems OK to be able to generate Captcha images.
What XOOPS version did you have?
If it is 2.3.x then /class/captcha/image/scripts/image.php should generate and show a Captcha image in your browser.
If you have Frameworks installed then /Frameworks/captcha/scripts/img.php should generate a Captcha image.

yes 2.3 and neither shows an image

How can I tell if Frameworks is installed? I thought it was but I don't see it in my modules. There is a Frameworks folder on my server though so I guess that means it's there.

The Frameworks is present, but the link I posted (/Frameworks/captcha/scripts/img.php) does only work when the referer is also pointing to the site. So it must be saved (with http and host) as link [url= or image [img in a news article or forum post first to test.

When I look at the html source of your Contact Us Formulaire, there is a link to a generated captcha image (http://crabstreetjournal.com/xoops/uploads/securityimage/cache/85bf26.jpg), but it is not accessible. Can you verify that this image is present or that these folders exists and have write permissions?

Cache wasn't writable (did I miss that step or is it something I should have just known to do??) I checked one form and the image is there. w00t!!! I'll do some more testing when I get home and come back and confirm if that was the problem.

No, it is a lack in the installation and installation documentation of XOOPS 2.3.x.
The directory should have been created at install and the /uploads/securityimage/ should been described as to be set to writable.

It appears to be working! No spam on our other forms but some still trickling in on the contact form but I suppose that is the work of a actual human filling them in.

Ugh.... I need to uninstall this Captcha. Members are complaining that the codes are unreadable over and over or are being rejected over and over. This is an issue because the forms are lengthy and it's detering people from using them.

There is also a text mode (see config.php), which might be easier.
The preserving of the entries in case the captcha fails is indeed a missing feature for this module.
