I tried SmartBlocks a while back with an idea of switching from XOOPS 2.2 to 2.0.16 if I could get SB to work. I couldn't figure it out, though, so decided to stay with 2.2.5.

I really would like to try SmartBlocks again so if someone could clue me in as to how to use it, I would be grateful.

Here is Mith's description of the module:

Quote:

SmartBlocks comes with eight blocks - one for each XOOPS block position - and should be set visible to all on all pages in their corresponding position.

Adding blocks to a page is done through the SmartBlocks module, where each module can provide a customised resolver class to define which pages are available and which page, the user is viewing. Alternatively, the resolver classes can be put in the /smartblocks/class/resolvers/ folder, where there are already a few resolvers to look at.

The resolver-defined pages are set in a hierarchy, where blocks can be set to "fall down" on subpages. This makes the front page merely the top of the hierarchy, the modules are the next level and then comes the module-defined subpages.

Sounds great! Just wish I knew what it meant. (scratching my head)

So, what I gather is that, after you get it installed, you set each block to visible on all pages. I did this, but I am not sure why.

Anyway, after you do that, then you go to the SB admin page and do what? For example, on this page I see SmartSection and each SS category. If I click on a category, I get a blank page. If I click on SmartSection, it takes me to a Create Block page. Now what? Don't spare the details.

And what is the "resolver class" stuff Mith is talking about and how to you use them?

I'm glad you asked, Jere. I just tried this a few weeks ago, couldn't figure it out so I uninstalled. I guess I'm just not fully grasping the concept.

That's the thing about Xoops. Lots of good stuff, but much of it has little or no documentation, so you have to go to the forums and hope to get an answer. I'm going to keep fooling with it as I can, but it's not at all intuitive which may mean it's very powerful. I wonder if anyone besides Mith is really using it?

Hi Kumar,

That post was one of the reasons I tried SmartBlocks. And... the answer is "yes" to all required but just couldn't figure it out.

How far have you gotten with it? Did you get it installed?

Yes but I guess my PHP knowledge is so limited that I need better instructions. I've uninstalled it already.

So, you were like me--you got it installed but didn't know how to use it? If so, then if I get it working I will post it here, and you might want to give it another try.

It's looking, though, like we're pretty much on our own. Hard to believe there's not somebody else using this module or knows how.

Yes, it installed fine - just didn't know how to use it. Spent some time searching smartfactory and XOOPS sites but came up empty. I had other things to figure out of more importance so I gave up. I look forward to seeing what you come up with if you get it figured out. Good luck!
