We have about run out of ideas trying to understand this...

There is a strange formatting issue we see when we place an HTML table in content. Let me describe it:

Most content modules allow you an Intro Text area and a Main or Extended Text area.

We put a single sentence in the Intro...and a small table (say 6x4) in the Main.

The resultant front-end page has a tremendous amount of "air" between the Intro line and the table. It is as if the table is "bottom-aligned."

We want the table to appear as the next line after the Intro when the article is read....now, you have a full blank screens-worth or two between them.

Tried all sorts of variations on the tags to create the tables...no help.

I see this in several content modules... we tried Content, News, SmartSection....they all react the same.

Are we fighting a style sheet issue?... tried different themes...still unlucky.

Can anyone explain this?

Thanks

Here is a typical result of using a table
Set up 3 articles in Smartsection on a test site here:

http://www.backupkit.com/modules/smartsection/category.php?categoryid=2

Coventry 1, 2 3 show the issue

Also...another test site, this time using News:

I think I can simplify the question...

I appears to occur in just about any 'content' style module...
..and I am guessing it is in the core, not the theme or the module itself.

Here it is...

If we put a table in the content, the front-end display "spreads out" the content - top to bottom -, wanting to bottom-justify the table.

The HTML code generated is throwing in 10 or more
<br>
between the single first line of text and the actual table.

...just can't find where this is happening.

There is no blank lines in the source of this, between the top line and the table...

This is stopping us from formatting article text with tables.

...any help?

More info...

The actual number of BR tags that appear between the first line of text and the table will vary based on the SIZE OF THE TABLE. (!)

The bigger the table...the more BR tags.

Could this be a Smarty-related thing?
(of which I know zero about)

Where is this top-bottom justification being generated?

Thanks

Looks like you found the problem and it is working okay?

I just checked and Convetry 1 and 2 were messed up but 3 was okay. Then I read some more of your posts went back to have a look and all 1 2 and 3 look okay now.

What was it?

Quest...naw, it is still screwed up.

The test files I linked above are a bit of a moving target, as I am trying all sorts of workarounds...

...now, they are scrunched all at the bottom.

I hope one of the gray-beards here can shed some light on the cause. It is common to just about any news or content or article module I try....

..you just can't get predictable results when you put an HTML table into the text.

The images in my earlier post are very representative of what happens....
...the table gets "bottom-justified" and ?something? is padding the HTML above it when it is rendered.

Thanks for following this saga.....

I had the same problem and resolved it by eliminating all hard line breaks. If your html is pasted in as one big block, you won't get the air. For some reason, some of the modules (like Sections) doesn't like the "enter" key.
