What does it take to build a site like facebook.com? Not the exact same thing, but same idea. I want users to be able to create their own profile page and put stuff up about themselves. I'm envisioning that the user interface will be similar to the user interfaces of blogger.com or other blog control panels.

What is the best way to approach this project? Use XOOPS as the core and build a mod? Or start from scratch? If I hire a firm to do it, what is the approximate cost? Just looking for general and a push in the right direction. Thanks.

You can use XOOPS core plus userpage module - not sure about the blog interface - but with turning on/off the right blocks you could do well with it. There is also a weblog module. What you might consider is a local install of XOOPS using a program called wamp5 to experiment with.
