I hope this is the right area to post. I want just a module to have centered between left and right column. I just want to have html or wysiwag. Or would this be considered a block? Sorry, I'm new to this.

You can create custom block for that. Set it to centercenter and set the right permitions in groups. Set it to be visible on top page (or any other page you want it to apear)

The downside of this is that you will not have a separate entry in main menu for news.
