anyone interested in helping me work out how my kids can do this?

My two daughters are very keen to start their own their own website like this one. It involves somethings i can and do understand and con teach them - membership, forums, site admin...but they want to run a 'game' like that on furypaws where they simulate owning kennels, breed and care for animals, earn credits and spend credits, enter animals in shows etc. I have no idea what kind of module they could play with in order to do this and would love it if someone would like to help me further investigate the possibilities for them. Another site they like is houndism What I can't work out is what kind of programming is used to make the 'games'. I can do the mebership, profiles, boards, etc. They are learning html and will be able to design a graphic atlas with site links...but this crux of whole site - this game - is a bit of a mystery to me. Anyone up for a bit of investigating and helping me work out what module we could build or modify to do the 'game' section? We'd be really grateful.

(PS - They are really into graphics programs at the moment so the spinoff will hopefully be they will learn to write their own theme...and one day who knows even a module!)

Yeh was looking at the idea the other day my self....sort of larger scale, gave me the idea from Gaiaonline being an online avatar world....
The idea is called a neo Pet or cyber pet....

I do feel to have a system where users of XOOPS could do this would be excellent due to smarty cache system... specifically if they could be linked up to myspace...so on a page is a link back to the site....so making a fast growing publicity...

Yet at time looked around sourceforge see if there was anything to adapt, and other then a full scale ajax system…which was very clever, with animated real time people wandering across the screen, you could then pm and talk to….. in php and mysql…forgot what the idea is called though…yet looked heavy and scared me…..
And..a XOOPS can do smarty, so if we did that it would run a lot better in principle due to the nature of Xoops.
So as soon as I find anything will inform you, did you try the painting system?...

Thanks Wiz! But we don't need to get too complex (yet) - i am sure they will be supergood at this one day and way faster than me one day! anyway - they are not after the 'sim' kind of game but rather a more static earn points and spend them by breeding and showing your animal kind of game.

I did see a recent news post about a site managing dog breeds- that is more what they are looking for only they won't have real dogs - but rather images of drawn dogs i think. This might give us the foundation of a data base - but the point (or $credit) and a place to spend the credit is another story.

Anyway - they are sleeping like angels right now so I wait till they wake to show them this.

I tried the painting but wasn't all that impressed with it and the colours on shi painter pro did not work for me. However...I have dowbloaded it and will play with it in my test site when i have more time. Jen

Ok - i think this is the concept they have been working with - but it is a bit more complex as they end up buying and selling the animals and have to spend earnings on things like food and vet care. However - at a simple level it could be a good place for them to start.

I'll get them to look through the online games link you gave.

Thanks for the reasearch here - appreciate it.

In the mean time - they are learning that 'mum we want to make our own website like this one' is far more complex than me saying OK...go for it! I am making them plan, search for a host and will get them started with a local install using wamp to play with. (BTW their ages are 16 and 12(or almost 13 as she keeps reminding me)) Looks like I will be in for a busy school holidays!

Hi,
do you have a clear idea about the rules - how the point will be earned and spent. IMHO that will be the tricky part.

However here is an idea:

1. Get a album or blog (maybe also article will work) module with rating (voting) system.
2. Users will upload their pets (picture/video). It could be their own pet, a drawing, picture of nigbours pet, picture of some animal in the zoo ... And write pets story/blog.
3. Depending on that (how good and interesting are the pictures and the story), visitors will rate/vote for the pet - points.
4. Have no idea how to spend them ...

Most of this (1, 2, 3 i think) could be done with existing modules just by playing with templates and language files.

Just an idea ...
..

Re: anyone interested in helping me work out how my kids can do this?

Me again!

have been doing some research - the question being just what kind of software or programing tool do these sites use to create what they do? They quite obviously use javascript and sql. i was hopeful that I would find some clue as to how I might get the kids started - but I give up!

I did find this Site with links to all kinds of virtual pets sites and games and another example of the exact kind of site the girls want showdog.com but I am so clueless as to what tools they may need to get started. I don't know - its like i can't see a 'thing' like wiz's paint board that could be ported in anyway. I can't tell what the building blocks of the sites are. (that's because i am dumb with this suff! ) From what the kids tell me they need to learn html and php - yeah great! But any suggestions about a useful web building tool for them to use would be appreciated. If anyone feels like pointing us in the right direction I would be grateful.

anyway - the eldest - amy has joined us now - so I hope she will simply take the time to read and learn for a while! I'll get her creating a XOOPS site - but the virtual breeding game will have to wait while we do more research.

Hi Stephan - we must have written at the same time! Thanks for that - That will be a good starting point for them as far as xoopsability goes! Thanks for the idea.

Hi I am the eldest of the two young ones. Nice to meet you.
I am basically making a virtual sim game.
Examples are at:
http://www.houndism.com
http://www.furry-paws.com
http://www.horseland.com
http://www.animalacres.net
http://www.wajas.com

These sites have basically got a point award system which they call there money point's.
They can buy stuff like animals, food, equipment and items.
For you to see what I am on about please visit these sites to get a view of what I want to make. I know it won't be easy but.... I know all my basic html and layout stuff. I am trying to find books on php and MySQL because it's not making sense (YET). I want to learn the following to make it nice and neat and not all over the place.
This includes a lot of work... I have been told that most use note pad. This was great other then I can’t seem to see where all line breakages are and what needs fixed.

I have looked around heaps of places to host. At the moment FriHost.com was my best bet.... It's got 250mb space 10 gig traffic per month - sub domain Ect. This also can be upgraded for $12 per month to 50 gig and so forth at bluehost.com.

I have been brain storming and writing idea's getting pictures ready and making up what I want pages to look like.

There are several things’ the site needs and I have been told that it's great so far. I have a down time forum for my staff and for when the site goes down people may use it till the site is back up.
Any one that would like to help would be wonderful when it comes to modules to use and help.

Regards
Amy (Langers)
