I don't understand any of this. I've tried for years now, and I can't get XOOPS to work, not even a bit. I install it onto my computer, but can't get the setup to work. The Instruction maual thingy says;
Installing XOOPS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First time installation

Preface:
Before begining the install process, we (the XOOPS team) ask that you have a good understanding of how to install and support server/hosted based software. As with anything in life, there's no easy answer or way. Sinice XOOPS is server based, it's not as easy to install as normal desktop software which in itself can be daunting to install so, please be familiar with setting up and installing the software listed below. Be familiar with how to configure CGI scripts and HTTP server software. It can easily be demonstrated that 80% of our support questions wind up being improper configurations with the server componenets or two pieces of software conflict. No two servers are configured alike.

To install XOOPS for the first time, you'll need to have the minimum following server software pre-installed:

* HTTP Server (Apache or IIS) "Note, XOOPS only officially supports Apache"
* PHP 4.1.0 and higher (4.1.1 or higher recommended)
* MySQL Database 3.23.XX

Before starting the install, be sure to have:

* Setup the HTTP, PHP and database server properly.
* Create a database for your XOOPS 2 installation

(Have your hosting company create one if you can't. The install script does provide this capability with the proper privileges).

* A user account with the proper database permissions.
* The ability to set the following directories and files world writeable: uploads/, cache/ and templates_c/ and the file mainfile.php
* Turn cookie and JavaScript? support in your browser on.

Installing locally
If your running a local environment for development or testing, make sure that you have the previous requirements met. Once this is done, copy the contents of the HTML directory (from the XOOPS 2 distribution file or CVS) to the root document path of your web environment. Once the files are copied there, you can start the install by typing http://yoursite.com. This will start the install process.

Installing on a hosted platform
If your running in a hosted environment, unpack the XOOPS 2 files locally or on the server if you have telnet or SSH access. Once you done this, make sure to move or copy all XOOPS 2 files from the HTML directory to your root web directory (your provider usually provides this location with directions). Once the files are copied there, you can start the install by typing http://yoursite.com. This will start the install process.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What is all that? How can an American teenager do all this? Freely? I'm already using Bravenet for Hosting and domains, so can someone please help me out with all this.

BTW, how did any of you actually figure out how to use this? It's too hard, but I'm really pushed to do this.

It sounds more complicated then it is, from that...that is specifiying many extra bits just incase and alot when you start to learn; you will understand like that! later...

Basiclly upload files to server...
Chmod files needed..to be

make Sql database...

Go to root/install folder via a web browser...

Fill in MySQL password and database in the install page...

Press submit a few times and if correct details are in you have an installed XOOPS site...

Its one of the easiest installs, so don't let the jargon in the first place make you miss the path... bit like reading the Bible that is people spend all day anylizing where things came from and forget they read it to understand life...

How about you try a local install to your PC first? it's a good way to get your head around the language - see if you can understand this: local install using wamp5

The other thing that helps to overcome the jargon is visual tutorials - For Visual tutorials please go here

These were an excellent help when I started. The other installation guide that made sense was this one.

There is also a glossary at the doc site: here It's still a work in progress but you may find it useful.

Above all else give yourself time - you didn't learn your favourite high school subject overnight - don't expect to do this any other way. One step and conecpt at a time. FYI I don't know how to Quote:
Be familiar with how to configure CGI scripts and HTTP server software.
but the site I use has a good admin panel...and I soon figured out FTP. Most servers already come with those listed requirements - you just need to make sure they do.

I bet before you know it your will be wanting to write your oen modules and themes!

Hope this helps some - a little more visualising what you are about to do will help you understand what you need to do.
let us know how you get on.

Ok, this all sounds good, err...looks good. I'll try using this information, but I'll still do more research.

Actually, I've given myself time. it's been over a year now since I've been trying with this. And one of my members is still waiting impatiently for it.
