Is it possible to set like say my news section to the home page? As in, the first page that comes up is routed to the news module.

Look in Admin----->System Admin---->General Settings--->Preferences

5th choice "Module for your start page" set to News.

You can even use MyStartup or MyHome modules to set different startup modules for different user groups.
