I have a site coming out soon (I host sites and do a lot of layout and tweaking, the sites are mostly run by other people) that some might find offensive or in bad taste. It's not a porn site by any means, and certainly not anything illegal. It has some rough language though and some kind of gross pictures, you know - college type humor. I want to be a responsible host/publisher, so I put up a splash screen as a warning, and I made sure the content rating was set to teen. Is there anything else that should/could be done to make sure that those (mostly parents) who attempt to filter this kind of content out can easily filter mine out? (like other meta tags, or code to show content filters what is actually on my site?)

btw the site in question ishttp://living-abomination.stufftoread.com

I would suggest at the very least making sure content of any possible "dodgy" nature is not displayed until a user is logged in.. and also perhaps a "adult site" like front page ... "warning, this contains content that you may not like... press here for a safe website" - type thing.

Yeah, i put up a splash screen, that's a must. The site doesn't have people log in really, but you just gave me an idea - he could have people log in to read anything beyond a certain level of decency. It's not too bad though, nothing hardcore or sexual or anything like that, so all I'm concerned with is helping the content filters keep kids out (who's parents don't want them to read stuff like that). Although for some reason, one of my other sites - the Windows Package Manager (project site for an OSS project) is blocked by all the content filters despite our hard work on making sure that everything on there is clean enough for anyone. weird.

In addition to what has already been mention, add an ICRA rating. ICRA (Internet Content Rating Association) is a non-profit international group that offers a voluntary content rating system. It's free for website owners as well as site browsers.

For website owners/webmaster - you rate your own site with regard to what kind of things it contains, such as vulgarities, nudity, etc. You're then given a small meta tag to place in your code.

For site browsers - you can voluntarily install an extension in IE and I think Firefox that allows you as a parent or otherwise to turn off access to sites containing whatever you find offensive. When your child (or anyone else using your computer) tries to visit the website they are asked for the content override password. Otherwise they are denied even seeing anything from that site on the screen.

The thing I like about ICRA is it's totally voluntary for both parties and totally free. But it only works if people use the ICRA plugin so add a link so they can get it.

"I'm going to see if this internet thing takes off" - someone told me this when I suggested he needed a website.

I wouls say use a "Terms of Use" or "Conditions of Use" page might as well as a splash page and the ICRA. Usually, these are used to enforce copyright by saying the site cannot be displayed in frames and so forth, but you could add, "I acknowledge I am over 18, and if I am offended by this material I am free to go to another site." Below, is a "Conditions of Use" statement I use. As it is a shopping site and nothing offensive I have not included any such statements, but it will give you an idea:

"We grant you a limited license to access and make personal use of this site. Please do not download (other than page caching) or modify it, or any portion of it, without the express written consent of __________________. This license does not include any resale or commercial use of this site or its contents; any collection and use of any product listings, descriptions, or prices; any derivative use of this site or its contents; any downloading or copying of account information for the benefit of another merchant; or any use of data mining, robots, or similar data gathering and extraction tools. This site or any portion of this site may not be reproduced, duplicated, copied, sold, resold, visited, or otherwise exploited for any commercial purpose without express written consent of Engle Traders. You may not frame or utilize framing techniques to enclose any trademark, logo, or other proprietary information (including images, text, page layout, or form) of ______________________. without written consent. You may link to the home page of ________________________, so long as the link does not portray ______________, or our products or services in a false, misleading, derogatory, or otherwise offensive matter. Use of this site consitutes agreement to these terms. If any part of this agreement is violated in any form, we may end your account"
