News 1.44 - modify notifications?

In News 1.44 there is no provision for notification of a new article within a particular category. I know this is planned for a future version, but I really need it now. SmartSection does this but does not have some other features I need.

Would it be hard to modify the notifications code to add notification within category, or would it be too involved?
