I have read the documentation manual and the posts in this forum. Many people seem to be having the same difficulty that I am with understanding the database.

I have a website that is hosted remotley by a provider. To my knowledge and in talking with the administrator, what I undersatand of the conversation is that MySql is running on the server but they do not have a database on the server that they can give you a password to and you can use as some of the posts have sort of suggested. I am wondering how exactly to phrase what I need when I talk to the site administrator?

I am wondering -- is it possible to use a microsoft access database that is in my web root directory? OR, is it possible to download a copy of MySql, create a database and then FTP upload it into my root directory?

Please help me to clarify these things for myself and so that I can ask my site administrator intelligently.

Thank you!

First of all what you need to do is create a database, then you would create a database user, then you need to associate the user with the database. Your host should have been able to explain that to you instead of telling you they can't give you a password to a database. Does your host supply you with cpanel? Do you have phpmyadmin available to you?
I would think you should just ask how to create a database. It would be easier if you have cpanel as an option to your hosting package. Let us know if you have access to cpanel or phpmyadmin, and we will help you get setup, sounds like your host is clueless.

Hope this helps,

John

I did speak with the host about a database and unfortunately their mail server went down and he didnt really have time to delve into it and of course he leaves on vacation tonite. All I really need is a members only section of my website that I am actually just developing for a sales proposal. I didnt initially intend to get into all of this until I saw what amazing things the XOOPS program offered and obviously the offerings would enhance my site capabilities and blow them away.

I have no phpmyadmin or cpanel...are these software packages because I will get them with no problem. If you could just please tell me what all I need if this is possible to do without my host....I can get MySql and other software packages if I just knew what I needed. I'm sorry to be so dumb about this like I said I didn't intend to get into this until XOOPS blew me away. Thank you very much for any direction you can give.

Hold on, I have a question. Do you currently have a XOOPS site up and running already, or are you trying to create one?

trying to create one...the installation stops unless you can give the wizard the name, username and pw to the database

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but I think your screwed for now. You will need to get a MySQL username and password plus the name of the database that your host supplies you. So the things that the installation are asking for you need to get from your host.

host
database name
database user
password

If you have no way to administer your web hosting package, (that is what cpanel does) then you are stuck.

phpmyadmin is a software package that you could install yourself, but you still need the database information to set it up.

If this host is not a very close personal friend that does not charge you, then you should switch hosts.

If you paid for this hosting then you probably have all that information in an e-mail that you got after you purchased the web space.

John,

Thanks for the information it is what I suspected. I will create a workaround for a demo purpose and discuss the options that are possible with them in the sales pitch. It's not a show stopper just a bench of my first string so to speak lol. Thanks!

If it's something you're intending to demo to a client, you may want to consider Webserver On A Stick to show clients what a running XOOPS site is like. All you need is this package and a flash frive, and you can have a XOOPS site running on any Windows computer (for demo purposes anyhow). I have a flash drive with it installed for theme testing purposes, and it works great!
