Performance problem on private server.

My forum alohaspirit is hosted by a friend of mine who has a private server.

Speed is ok when there are less then 5 people online. When there are more, users sometimes have to wait 9 seconds - 14 seconds before their posting is submitted.

Now, I searched for performance solutions here, we will install eAccelerator because 60% of bandwidth is php, I already tried the fastest cache hack of GIjoe, but the problem remains, so I think it has to be a setting of the apache server or the mysqld.
Or could this be related to the mailing of the forum?

I tried to be not succesful with this forum, but I failed, lol, so if anyone has some kind of default settings for a 'forum' server, I would be very glad to read it here.

eaccelerator will help a lot. Try MySQL caching too, and definitely, definitely try to use (if your friend is using Apache) mod_gzip or mod_deflate. You will notice a very significant drop in bandwidth as well as an increase in speed. You can literally save 75% of your bandwidth using it, and that will make your site a ton faster.

If your friend has never optimized MySQL for performance, it is probably using the default settings which can be greatly improved upon. Remember, MySQL initial configuration needs to be conservative so it can be installed on many systems with no problems.

See this WHT Thread, although discussing optimization for VPS, it will give you ideas for a dedicated server.

If your site traffic is heavily centered around forum posts, then I would actually think twice about MySQL caching. On a site that is heavy on the database writes (such as a forum) it can actually slow things down even further. Using an Opcode accelerator (eAccerator/APC), HTTP compression, loading PHP as a module and optimising your XOOPS caching are all very well worth it though. There are many many threads on performance in these forums, you should be able to find plenty there.

My friend set up the server like proposed in the opening of the link you gave and it gives a speed up of the site that can be noticed. There is still a slow down from time to time, but that is not related to users visiting the site anymore.

W're testing eAccelerator, when testing is Ok, it will be implemented somewhere next week.


Now I have a question on gZip. In XOOPS (2.2.4 in my case) I can choose for gZip in preferences.
Is this safe to do?
