I'm new to XOOPS and all, I might be a supernewb just for asking this question:

How do you get your news to show up on the front page?

What XOOPS version did you install? for 2.0 versions in your preferneces you select 'news' module as your start page. Head over to the documentation site linked on the left and grab the user manual. Cheers

Also, how do you display links on the navigation bar that aren't module links?

You mean custom links? Try Multimenu.
