Is there a way to use non-default (Webmasters/Registered Users/Anonymous) groups to control access to specific Forums?

The site I am running is a World of Wacraft Guild site, and I want to create an officers-only forum where sensitive topics can be discussed without prying eyes.

I would prefer to not have to make all the officers Webmasters.

Any suggestions?

i'm not sure what version of the forums you're using, but if you get the latest CBB, you can easily do that in the admin section

Currently running 2.0.13.2 and the existing forums module, newbb.

You're probably using newBB version 1, which has limited access controls. In that version, the only way to accomplish what you want is to create a private forum and give access to the individual users.

As Mantooth said, CBB allows forum access control by groups.
