If you want the news module to show on the front page then you go to
system-preferences-general settings
look for
Module for your start page
and set it to News. Yes it will be www.yoursite.com/modules/news/ you can search the forums for rewrite url and you might find what you need.
For the theme, while you are inside
system-preferences-general settings
look for
Update module template .html files from themes/your theme/templates directory?
Set it to yes, until all your changes are done, then set it back to no.
