Uh oh, had a feeling about this, Havent made this feature public yet on our site. And was curious about the potential problem.

But yes, rediculous we should be able to disable the trackback feature.

Will start looking into it..

First step would be to check t for comment instructions in the php scripts..

Since we haven't made ours 'public' yet we will experiment and get back to you.

It looks like some commenting out might work..maybe.

Out of my grasp im afraid at the moment, will pass it on to other members of our team.

Anyone know if wordpress has the same multiuser function?
Otherwise Id say switch. But for a simple and good module weBlog would do just fine.

If we can just figure out a way to disable the trackback feature.

-more ont his later I suppose unless someone has any ideas.

I got over 6000 spams! It took me almost 1 hour to clean my database. However, only couple of hours after my cleanup, they come back again!

Guess I have to disable weblog before someone can find a solution.

well no doubt. I mean it may sound counter to what you want, but is it still a problem if only registered members can view your blog, and you have removed from template?

Just curious because thats the option we are considering...

I turned on "Option/Update ping" but I am not sure if this can help.

Unfortunately restricting my blog to members only will not be the answer for me, and I have started the move to WordPress which I will have to do manually.

In the mean time, I use phpmyadmin to find the trackback part of the database browse it and then just empty that DB twice a day, its quick and simple.

There is a phpmyadmin module HERE

I haven't tried it as I have access via my webserver, but I tried and earlier version before I had webserver access and it was fine.

Hmm I guees I dont understand how trackback works.

I mean. If you disable, or remove it from templates, (the actual links) do you still get swamped with spam?

That is to say how do you get the spam?

I'd be happy to share all modified templates with the removal of physical links, but I am unclear if that will actually prevent it from happening.

Any idea?

Try blocking those IPs I posted earlier. I haven't had a single trackback or comment spam since I did that.

Hi ace, that seems like a reasonable solution.

However, my experience with IP banning is that you always wind up banning a range that was not intened, not the exact IP address. At least I recall this being a problem with earlier XOOPS versions, it may have been addressed by now.

What do you think?
If I remove all instances of trackback from the template will we we still get spam? (ie: will bots just find the appropiate file to do so?)

Thanks for any info,
I've always liked weBlog and its potential. (and we are going to make a nice style sheet and format it proper and use it once more...but this trackback issue has us concerned.
