What about themes then?
are you obligated to leave the copyright or *can* you remove it?

The way I see it, themes for XOOPS are somewhat part of the code (as with all php scripts) and thus inherit the GPL from the main source. This way removing the copyright notice from a theme for XOOPS shouldn't be a legal problem ether...

With themes there's one catch: the copyright on images. They can require you display a notice stating the copyright for those. The HTML is part of the code.

In my opinion should copyright be left as it is, or at least place a small notice somewhere else if you remove it from the footer.
