Obviously the developers would prefer if it was left in, but there is no obligation to do so.

The only copyright that can't be removed is the comments from the code itself. You do not visibly have to display copyright anywhere when using the GPL.

I have been taken to task myself for not giving credit where credit it due.

A template I was using did not have any reference to Xoops.

A user emailed me to point out that although not required, it wasn't very good etiquette to not have a plug for XOOPS somewhere on the site.

I agreed and added a XOOPS logo in the template footer (where it should have been).

whilst it is sometimes polite to, sometimes people don't like people to know what system they are using, especially competitive types of site..

Thanks to the generous licensing of Xoops, you are perfectly entitled to treat it as a trade secret. As with all open source software, if you donate some time and effort freely to provide feedback and bug reports to the developers (a testing process that costs commercial software companies dearly), you can go to bed with a clear conscience.

I believe a donation ensures complete clarity.

Another reason. Hackers.

Why give them system, module, version number, etc? for them to google when an "OOPS" is found.

ESPECIALLY the way things have been lately....

if you really want to give credit without listing at the bottom of every page and every module you can use xCredits that is what it was designed for. Just set the module for registered users only. most hackers do not take the time to register at your site just to see who created it or built it
