How to set up xoops 2.2.3 front page?

I have looked high and low and cannot figure out how to populate the "front page" of a 2.2.3 XOOPS site. I have the community pack installed, there are all sorts of interesting modules available and those seem pretty straightforward to configure.

I'd like:

A basic front page article "this is what this site is all abbout"

Then the option to show "news" headlines below that.

It must be simple?

Create a custom block in your Blocks Administration.

Place it in Centre Block - Centre and only visible in "Top Page"

Again place a block from your "news" module Centre Block - Centre and only visible in "Top Page" and give it a weight value higher than the custom block that you created for your "welcome page"

THANK YOU! Blocks were a huge clue for me, a major part of XOOPS that I'd not even touch yet.

It worked as advertised but for some reason the image I placed in to the block does not render, I get just the html

"This is the front page of the XYZ Systems website. Resized Image"

The block is set to html. I have wysiwyg enabled. Did I miss some other config step? This is a fresh install of 2.2.3a.

Can you post the sourcecode for your block?
(if neccessary make the url unreadable)

Hi Bender

Not sure how I'd post the source code of the block? Do I show it in the blocks editor in xoops, the get the source of from the browser (view source) and try to extract the part that applies to the block? View source reveals a mass of stuff...

Also, I called my custom block "FrontPage" and so "FrontPage" is rendered at the top of the page...I don't want that, is there a way to get rid of it?

Can someone help with this? Perhaps using a custom block to implement a site front page isn't the ticket after all? I would really like wysiwyg editing and that seems to be disabled or something. Is there a good alternative approach?

Hi - I'm still not sure what you are looking for - copying from the editor to here:

this should be bold

But that'll convert to bold here...[-b-]this should be bold[-/b-] less the hyphens is what is looks like here.

The source of the block editor page is huge but I guess you want me to try to post it here, not sure how it'll render:

Put this in your block, and select a content type to be: HTML

src="http://www.yoursite.org/yourpicture.gif"
style="border: 0px solid ;">

You'll get a centered picture (centered in block), and when you click on it, you'll go to url you've put in your code.

Otherwise, if you want just to show picture, without link, type this:

style="border: 0px solid ;">

ok, but I already knew that regular html tags worked there. The question is, why does the bb-code stuff fail here, but seem to work elsewhere?

And, if there is something fundementally messed up when using blocks like this, is there a simple and reliable way to have XOOPS present a front page to my site that does allow wysiwyg editing?
