I get this message when I go into admin interface.....

Warning: httpd.www/mainfile.php is writeable by the server.
Please change the permission of this file for security reasons.
in Unix (444), in Win32 (read-only)

The problem is that my webhost does noit allow me to change it through a FTP client. I need some advice how to change this some other way....

Thanks!

Try through the file manager of your control panel for your site. All Web site control panels should have some type of file manager.

No cPanel I see, do you have any other control panel? If not ask your host to adjust the permissions.

Ahhhh, now I remembered it.

I made a small text file called chmod.php:

Then I used FTP to transfer it to my site and executed it via Mozilla.....

Voila, all is OK!

You don't see something like "Shell" or "Webshell" anywhere?

Somehow you had to have changed the permissions on the template_c, cache, uploads, and mainfile.php for the initial installation.

I'd contact your hosting company and ask them.

Well, my advise would be if your host does not supply a mechanism to set permissions to your files, time to find a host that is not so paranoid. Part of site security is handling file chmod.

I have just moved my site to a Virtual Private Server to give me full control over my sites settings. Close to a dedicated server, but with my traffic I am not ready for that yet. My permissions can be set by my control panel (webmin) FTP, and through shell access (SSH). But there may be a script to run to do it, but I still think that you should have control of your files.
