sometimes poor performance???

I've been running XOOPS 2.0.13.1 for a couple weeks now on http://www.wildlifeinthecity.com and I'd say that a good 60 to 70% of the time page access and load times have been acceptable.... but sometimes it just takes sooooo long for a page to load!?

I've already confirmed that it's not my internet connection or my web hosts connection. (anywhere from 5 to 60 seconds)

Can anyone suggest how I could find out why this is happening?

Amount of simultaneous connections? Some slow blocks?!

110 running Apaches processes almost kill my poor Celeron (LA 35, ~270 seconds on page)

Install the page timer & MySQL counter I wrote, and it will tell you the time taken to generate each page, as well as the number of MySQL quereies. From there we should get a better idea of where to concentrate efforts. Can I also ask what you did to confirm that it is not your Internet connection or web host connection? I don't think it is your connection as I just experienced a 45 second server response time. This *could* be connection related, but I think it would be more likely to be server configuration.

I'm on 56k dialup and load time was no problem.

5 seconds on a 128 conection. It´s not bad. But use brahs´s page timer & MySQL counter for to see where to find a problem.
